Cool 1995 Honda Accord LX shifter Transmission trouble shooting

Good Afternoon !
I recently had a refurbished transmission for my 95 Accord LX, 5 speed manual
installed. I got it back from the mechanic and the shifter was a little loose. It had slop in the movement. The slop got progressively more over then next two weeks and then it went completely sloppy.
It was now stuck in 3rd gear. When I picked up the Honda from the Mechanic, I noted third gear was a little rough sounding compared to when I was in the other gears.
1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th, even reverse were all smooth.
I was facing down a steep hill when I parked the car, and didn't notice the stick went slack until I got back into the car and started it, and discovered the stick was completely loose. Its an H shift configuaration with 5th on the upper right, and reverse straight back behind it. I took the shifter assembly apart, but didn't see a broken plastic collet as described by some home mechanics. So Im wondering if the symptoms and back story might suggest a broken cable or some
adjustment? Rather than a severe problem with the transmission itself?

I'd take it back to the mechanic to get it fixed.

I'd look where the cables attach to the transmission to see if they are loose.
