PA,

Thank you so much. I'm so happy to hear that. I think that the tec one was the cheaper of the two...taking the coil back and getting the icm the coil price should just about cover it.

Hopefully this does it.

Thank you again,

Donnie

Here's the TEC distributor.

And here's the Hitachi distributor. They look different so you can tell. Maybe some previous owner in the last 14 years swapped the wrong distributor on.

Guys,

Sorry to be a dummy but is there anything I should know before I pull pieces out of the distributor?

I see that the ignition control module isn't just able to be pulled out...I have to remove another piece that is directly under the rotor..??

Also, do you guys just use a little stubby phillips head screw driver to get to those screws that are inside the distributor that hold the ICM on?

Thank you,

Donnie

The screw (#10) holding the rotor is usually difficult.
Then #6 is a plastic shield that snaps out.
I didn't think there's a clearance problem, so the phillips screwdriver doesn't have to be stubby.

Jim,

Thanks so much. The screw holding the rotor on is easy, I just bump the engine over until the screw is facing "out"(towards the front of the car)...

That plastic cover thing is actually held on with screws on my car, it doesn't just pop off I don't believe...

And it looks like there is a little screw down in the "bottom" of the distributor that is holding the ICM down...(by bottom I mean the part closest to the ground since the distributor is laying over on it's side.)

Thanks again, I'll try and get it pulled out today..

Yeah that piece that is under the rotor inside the distributor is held on with three screws...the bottom corner screw is hard to get to because there is wires in the way that connect to the coil I believe..

There are 4 little male spades sticking off of the ICM with 4 individual wires connected to each one, two green, one black/yellow and one more that I can't remember the color.

There is also some wires directly underneath the ICM itself that are connected directly under the ICM wire connections..??

Can I just disconnect these?

I don't see any other way to get that piece off that's under the rotor unless I get those wires out of the way..

Also, I do have stubby screw driver now but I've got to run home and work on it...I don't see any way though that a normal screw driver could get that screw out that's inside the distributor housing holding the ICM on..???

Thanks for any more help,

Donnie

There should only be four wires connected to the ICM that you will need to remove.

PA,

Thank you. How do I get to the little 2 screws that hold the icm down in the distributor housing??

Can I take the three screws off that hold that piece on that's underneath the rotor?

I'll post a picture later if what I'm saying doesn't make sense..

Thanks,

Donnie

Do you know what wires I'm talking about thought that are DIRECTLY underneath the ICM itself? I only ask because there isn't much slack at all in the wires so I don't want to pull on them trying to get that one screw that holds the "plastic piece" on. I put that in quotes because mine is actually some type of metal or REALLY hard plastic.
