Default 1996 cruise control

So I’ve got the cruise control button by the window then the ‘set’ button on the steering wheel. The green light pops on by the window but my cruise control won’t set and no dash light appears. It was working before, around the same time frame of it stopping my break switch plastic piece broke and I replaced that. I’ve checked my fuses, I pulled the cover off the set buttons and checked the internals in regards to that am not seeing anything that would present an issue. I saw another forum say hold both decel and set set buttons at the same time to see if a light pops on? Nothing. So I thought connective issue in the set button module stuck conductive in it to see if I could jerry it into working. I’ve got nothing. I’m really hoping it’s a module issue and not something where I’ll have to shove my hands into small engine spaces. Any thoughts?

Including the brake switch is a useful piece of information, so thank you.

Hitting the brake will disable the cruise control by engaging the brake switch. Check to make sure your brake lights are not on all of the time. The brake switch is adjustable and you may have it adjusted too tight where the switch is slightly engaged when your foot is off the brake pedal.

So I did a little more diy fixes and put a penny on the switch bushing which causes the dash light to activate when hitting “set”. So that’s progress but now it will not maintain the speed I’m trying to set or any speed
