Cool 1997 Check Engine Light (4 cylinder)

Hello All,

Today while driving into work I noticed the CEL lit on the dash of my 1997 Accord SE.

A short time later I noticed the speedometer not working, so realize they are both most likely related.

Has anyone experienced a similiar problem or have an idea of what might need repair?

Appreciate any suggestions!

JM

Get the code read. You can do an auto parts store. If they are related it could be your Vehicle speed sensor on your transmission. But thats a wild guess without knowing the code.

Just jumpered the 2 pin connector under the glove box (as decribed in the DIY section by PAhonda) and getting one long flash and seven short, so it looks like code 17 is present.

Now need to check into that.

Just as I thought. Vehicle Speed Sensor.

First check the fuse. Under dash fuse, No. 1 (10A) Fuse. Make sure its not blown.

Then you can check the wiring first at the sensor.
Black should have continuity to ground.
Yellow should have battery voltage with the ignition on
and orange should have 5v with the ignition on.

The sensor is on top of the transmission housing I believe. Should be in the same general area whether its an auto or standard.

Cool

Thanks for the info RR.

I checked the fuse, which is ok. Also the speedometer was working intermittently, so also thinking sensor.

Ordered one on Ebay, and will install and hopefully everything will work fine then.

No problem. It could always be the wiring but its not too uncommon for the sensor itself to go. Let me know if it works out.
