1997 Honda Accord SE transmission noise
Just bought a used 97 Honda Accord SE Auto 2.2L I4 MPI Engine with 124K miles. Noticed it makes an odd noise when you put it in reverse, sounds like almost like a meoww or whrrrooww noise. To be clear, this noise happens when it is put in reverse, not while backing up. After driving it on the freeway I've noticed that it occasionally makes this noise when shifting as well, though it's not consistant and doesn't seem to be quite as loud as when it's in reverse but that could just be due to the road noise. I checked transmission fluid and it appears to be at the right level and when rubbed off the dipstick it is red not black which I gather should be a good sign. I had to have the starter replaced a few days ago and I had the mechanic at the shop listen to the noise it makes when placed in reverse and he didn't seem to think it was a big deal but I hadn't noticed that it was making the noise while driving as well so I don't know if that would change the diagnosis. Other than that it does seem to shift fine, the transition is smooth, no clunks, and at freeway speed it shifts around 3k or 4k on the tach. Power is good.
I just bought the car and I certainly can't afford to replace the tranny if it's about to crap out. What does this sound like?
Also, I just noticed an oil leak today under the front passenger side wheel, couldn't tell whether it's coming from the oil pan or maybe it's a blown oil pump gasket? Power steering fluid is at the low marker, I'll top it off but is that something to be worried about or is it normal for it too lose a bit over time?

You should lose very little PS fluid. Try to find the source of the leak, then repair. Use only Honda PS fluid, or fluid that is designed for Hondas. Hondas do not like generic PS fluid.
I think that you should do a drain and refill on the transmission fluid. Search L7_RsnD8hAU on YouTube for a video on how to do this. I would buy Honda ATF from the dealership and the crush washers as well.
I would do one drain/refill (3 quarts) and see if things improve. If they do, you may want to do two more, because you can only drain 3 quarts out, and about 6 quarts remain in the transmission. Do not ever have the transmission power flushed.
