Default 1998 Accord LX shifting problem

Hi,

I have a 1998 Accord LX 4-door with the 2.3L I4 and 5speed manual.

First off its a great car. Got it used with 83,000 on it. Up to 93,000 now.

My problem comes when shifting up (accelerating). As per normal in a stick shift car I let off the gas, push in clutch, move gear lever, let clutch out, accelerate.

However after I take my foot off the gas and push the clutch the RPM's rise about 100 rpm and stay there for a second or so, and then fall. This can get a little annoying and to me it would seem it adds to clutch wear. Not to mention it looks like I can't shift correctly.

I have searched this site and found someone with a similar problem. From what I read there is some kind of electronic thing that regulates the air flow in the throttle body. Now I'm not an idiot when it comes to cars but I'm not sure what they were talking about. The solution posted there was to unplug the system and get a permanent CEL, or make some kind of restrictor plate. Not really sure how to do any of that.

So does anyone have a similar problem or know some kind of fix?

As a side question, how hard is it to replace a clutch in these cars? I think mine will need it soon. It slips quite a bit when accelerating hard.

Thanks.

That thing is the Idle-Air Control Valve (IACV) and it's job is to regulate the idle.

Search for threads with "IACV" or "surging idle" for some tips. You can go through those things, & set the base idle.
