Default 2000 Accord Cooling Fan stays on

Hello,
I tried to use the "Search" feature of this website first, but it appears to not work.

Q: The radiator cooling fan in my 2000 Accord will not turn off. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Most likely reason is a failed closed Thermoswitch B, which causes the fan to come on when coolant temp reaches 225F w/ engine OFF. You can confirm this by removing the connector to thermoswitch B. On earlier models it was on the front of the engine on the upper radiator hose engine side fitting. Remove the connector and if fan stops, you need a new thermoswitch B. If not, then a short to ground in the ground side of that circuit is causing the fan to run full time.

good luck

My '98 Accord doesn't have A & B thermoswitches, and it can't run after turning off the key. I think the 2000 is the same.

Is this a V-6? Does it stop running when you turn off the key?

Thanks Jim,
Yes it's a 2000 V-6.
No, it does not stop when turning off the car.

I pulled the fan relay switch and it has something rattling around in it. I stuck the switch back in and now the fan does not come on at all...?
But, I can drive the car and the temperature gauge reads normal.
I think it might be the switch module because it seemed to have a part rattling around inside it. I called my dealer and a new switch is $45, or for $85 they will test the car and tell me exactly what the problem is.

Fan relay shouldn't have anything rattling around, so you KNOW you need one. May as well get it & see. Got a multimeter & some jumper wires? You can test the switch yourself.

The "fan switch" that I was talking about is a temperature switch mounted into the cooling system. On a 4-cyl it screws into the thermostat housing. Lets get a V=6 owner to chime in here...

If you unplug the fan switch & jumper the wires with a paperclip, the fan should run (key on). That would test the entire circuit & nail it as a bad switch.

OK, #7 is the hose nozzle at thethermostat; #14 should be the fan switch.

Mike,,
I would have the car properly diagnosed , i know it costs a bit of money but at the same token you could be wasting money replacing unneeded part (s) ,

Thanks so much guys. I will take the car in this week. It's time for it's annual checkup anyhow.
I am still amazed that the car runs cool with no working fan...? I live in Arizona and it's really hot here.

Thanks again,
Mike
