I have a 2000 Honda Accord EX and it turns over but it will not start. I just got the car In Feb. 2013. It was fine for the first month I had it and then it would not start sometimes and if I left it alone and went back to try to start it it would start. When it happened the first time the guy I bought it from said to replace the ignition igniter module so I did and it was ok for a little while but then it got to where it is now and just turns over. I have had several people look at my car but all anyone can tell me that it could be a list of things from the fuel pump, coil pack, distributor etc. I just really need to know where I should start. Thank you!

 

Turn the key to on/posII and watch the CEL - does it come on for 2~3 seconds and then go off - during this time you should hear the fuel pump prime.

Pull the tube off the TB and open the butterfly - full throttle - and spary a bit of carb cleaner in there. Close butterfly and try to start the car.

 

I cant hear the fuel pump prime. And spraying the carb cleaner the car still wont start.

 

Does the cel come on and then go off?

The fuel pump is very hard to hear.....might have to open the panel in the trunk and put your hand on it while someone turns the key to on.

But you say even with carb cleaner it would not start....that leads me to a lack of spark.

Is this a 4 or 6 cyl ? I'm going to assume 4 cyl since you noted the icm before - and the 00 6 cyls are COP.

Are you able to test for spark? There are some cheap testers you can buy, some stores might rent them.

 

The cel light doesn't come on. The only lights that come on when the key is turned to on is the srs the oil and the battery.
It's a 4 cyl.
I haven't checked for spark because I don't know how.

 

Ok, well if the CEL is not coming on for 2~3 seconds then I'm going to go back to a fuel issue.

Can you test the main relay (sometimes call the fuel pump relay)?

Not yet. I'm not sure how to test it I have to wait until a friend comes over I'm hoping tomorrow.

 

I'm not sure if I will be able to get someone to check it. How do you check it?

So I'm going to go "caveman" and still really won't know for sure but will get close. You will need a helper for this.....all they have to be able to do is turn the key from off (0) to on pos II and watch the CEL light.

Pop the trunk. Pull the carpet up, if you fold down the rear seat it will kind of fold/roll up where the seat is down.

On the left drivers side of the trunk floor you should see a "cover" held down by some black "sticky" stuff. Use a flat head screw driver and gently pry up that cover.

Under that cover you should see the top of the fuel pump...two hoses and an electrical connector with ~3 wires (maybe more, going on memory which is bad).

Have the helper turn the key to "on"/pos II (remember 0= key out/ I= acc like the radio is on/ II is where the key would be as the car was running). When the helper does this you have your hand on the top of the pump - they are watching the cel. Do you feel the pump "run"/"vibrate"? Does the cel come on and go off - once the cel goes off the pump will stop running?
