2000 V6 Alternator

I replaced the first alternator at 110K mi. The second just went out after 15K mi which was a remanufactured alternator from the local discount parts house. I consider a failure at 110K a premature failure, however most folks are telling me this is typical (planned obsolecense?).
Is there an alternator out there designed to last twice as long?
One of my first cars was 76 civic wagon. That went for 350K miles withonly replacing the water pump (3 times) clutch (once) and spark plugs (bout 50), valves, rings(once). My expectations for reliability are high.
