Default 2001 Honda Accord engine problem

My husband's 2001 Honda Accord was having trouble shifting gears, now it won't get over 35 mph without the engine smothering down. He says he can get it up to 3000 RPM and it will smother down to 2000 RPM. That is even setting in park it will do it. It has 283000 miles on it. Any hints on what he might need to check or replace. Or questions I might need to ask him. He is not a computer guy he leaves that up to me but he works on his own vehicles if he knows what to look for.

I'd be inclined to check for the following:
  • Have the "OBD-II codes" read.
  • Make sure the timing belt hasn't jumped a tooth (how long *in miles and years* since it was changed?)
  • Clogged catalytic converter.

1998 thru 2001 had A/T problems.if you hook up a scanner and have any codes startinf with # 27 it's the trans. Those trans are complex and should be worked on by shops that have the proper tools.

Good luck!

Thanks Redbull-1 it was the only forum that would allow me to add a post, so that's why I put it there.

Shipo don't know how long or if the timing belt has been changed. We bought it used about 30,000 miles ago. My husband uses the car to run back and forth to work to keep the miles down on his truck. Have sent all your suggest to him. He's at work right now. Thanks everyone

Fastgoat told him about #27 also. Transmissions is the one thing he won't touch. If it cost too much to fix will probably start parting it out to recoup the money we put into it.
