Default 2004 4-cyl: cranks full speed; suddenly stops cranking; always succeeds 3rd attempt

- Problem is intermittent, has happened only 8 times in 3 months, but happened twice today

- Starter cranks full speed for a 1-2 seconds, then immediately stops cranking (key at start position) and all dash goes dark, turn off key and try 2nd time, same thing happens. On the 3rd attempt, it always starts.

- Dealer says they checked starting circuit, battery, cables, and trouble codes (none stored). They could not reproduce the problem.

- The rare times it happens it's usually after driving until engine up to temp, stop for 5 to 20 minutes, then try to start. But today did it after off for a couple of hours.

Anyone know what the cause could be?

Does immobillizer light come on? How about the battery cables? If you can tap into the BLK/WIT wire ware it comes out of the ignition switch with a test lit when prob. happens is the lite on? If that is good go to the BLK/WIT wire at the starter moter with a long wire into car use any old 12V lite like an clearence lite of a old truck to check for power when it happens also it has a relay in under dash fuse box can you find it and change it with a good one?this may take some time but we must split the ckt up to find the prob. also if it is a auto transmission it has a range switch witch controls gnd. for the relay BLK/WIT wire keep us posted

I just edited my post to add that the dash goes dark when the cranking stops. My girlfriend omitted telling me that symptom. It's her car; I've not seen the start problem myself but I rarely drive it.

joec44 -- can you tell me the name of the relay in the fuse so I can buy one (I don't have the car with me now)

More likely a failing ignition switch assy. A common Honda problem for 20 years now.

good luck
