The filter on a V6 is in the transmission case, see attached image. The dealer normally does not consider this a normal service item.

If you decide to replace the filter, you may want to stick with the Honda OEM filter. List price is only $24.17 and sometimes it can be purchased for less through Honda estore for local dealer pickup. You don't want a cheap knock-off filter media breaking up in the transmission.

Thank you for the quick response! This car is at just under 174000 and I wonder if it would be in my best interest to go ahead and replace it?

My thoughts would be to leave it alone and just do normal drain and fill of the transmission fluid. Like I previously stated, it is not a normal service item.

I replaced the filter a couple times on my 03 V6. The filter was pretty disgusting, so I was glad I did. How dark is the fluid? Lots of stuff on the drain plug magnet? If so I would change it. The filter was cheap online, and I did the drain and fill plus filter myself.

PS: Neither of those filters look correct to me. I would get the filter from a dealership, and make sure you get the one for the V6 automatic. The one in the metal case is for the I4 engine.

I appreciate both your input so much! The trans fluid is really dark and gross. I guess I'll leave it up to the guy that works on my car to decide if he wants to change the filter. My thoughts are that he will.
Again, thank you!

Dude did you see any benefit to changing the filter?
