Default 2007 Accord Oil Level Error

I changed oil/filter in my "newused" 2007 Accord LX w/ 2.3L engine (non-Itec). Manual calls for 4.4 US qts w/ oil filter replacement. I added precisely 4.4 qts and checked oil after startup and drain-down (3-4 mins). Oil on dipstick was a full qt. low. I added remainder of my 5th qt, and still was below full mark on dipstick. I looked at dipstick and it does not appear to be damaged or have a moved stop.

Anyone else have this experience w/ late model Accords?

regards

I would double check your shop manual and verify the capacity in the owner's manual. Liters and quarts are about the same volume, so reading the wrong unit likely isn't the issue.

My shop manual has capacities listed for other accords as 4.2, 4.5, and 5.9 quarts, where mine requires 4.5 quarts. Maybe you read the wrong one?

I rechecked shop manual (2003-2007) and it's same capacity for all 4-cyl. engine variations (4.4 US qts w/ filter). I also checked owner's manual and got same spec.

thanks

I'm confused about the engine. It should be 2.4 liters (K24)? I didn't know there were any USA Accord versions without iVTEC?

I think I saw a spec somewhere that total oil is 5.3 quarts. I usually drain more than 4.4 because I rotate tires as the oil is draining. Tilting the car every which way makes more oil drain out.

Believe the dipstick.

Engine spec says 2.35L, which could be 2.3 or 2.4 L. My engine is not Ivtec (Accord LX). All 4-cyl engines are same displacement from 2003-2007.

The 5.3 qts spec is for an engine overhaul. Maybe the thinner oils (5w-20) drain down better leaving less trapped in valves, etc.

thanks

I just looked in the Helm book, it says 5.6 quarts for overhaul, 4.4 quarts for drain/fill with filter.

I'm guessing the difference between overhaul & drain has more to do with puddles trapped in places that won't drain. 1.2 quarts is a lot of oil to be hanging on by viscosity. Open a valve cover, there's lots of puddles of oil that have no drain path unless you dismantle the engine.

You're right about the displacement too, but Honda calls the engine a K24 something; that's what I had remembered. I'll have to remember that a non-iVTEC engine exists; my 2003 LX was iVTEC.

I have the almost identical experience with my 2006 4 cylinder. Adding the full five quarts of oil brings level almost to the full mark on the dipstick.
