My 92 Accord EX has a leak from the oil cooler and I have replaced the O Ring twice, but I can't get it to seal. I am underneath the car watching for the leak and it will start leaking couple of minutes after starting the engine. There is no question it is the oil cooler, I can see the oil seeping out, everything else is clean. I also tried putting the gray Permatex sealer on the O ring, that also didn't work.

I read in another forum about getting a slightly thicker O Ring, that may work, I may try that if I can find one.

Any suggestions?

Strange Fact - Even though Autozone has the how to for this online, they carry absolutely none of the parts! Nor would they order them.

No , NO, there is no need for a ticker o-ring,,,,,,did you make sure the old o-ring is out?? if you installed a new and correct o-ring from Honda, it should not leak , did you tighten everything properly?? the leak might be coming from OIL PRESSURE SWITCH it is located right above the cooler , i would chk that out ..

 

The leak is from the oil cooler, I can see it seeping out by using a mirror, no chance of it coming from the oil pressure switch. The old O ring is out and the assembly was put back together and torqued as accurately as I can with a beam type torque wrench. I've gotten two O Rings from the Honda dealer. The old o ring of course came out flat, it flattened quite a bit more than the width of the new o ring, but just a little shorter. I really wonder if the new o rings are as large as the original.

 

if you are absolutely sure that it is coming from the housing than ,, you either got the wrong seal,, not tight properly ..or seal is not properly seated in the groove

when you install the seal,, do you put some honda bond to make sure that the new seal does not get out of place ??

 

Anybody knows if removing the freaking cooloer out is an option?

Thanks so much for the trouble description, follow up diagnose and solution. It was helpful in fixing my 205000-mile 93 Honda SE. Few more tips to others from my experience:

[ul][*]The o-ring is a stocked item at your local Honda dealer for $4.55[*]You don't have the disconnect the coolant lines to the oil cooler, just the oil cooler center bolt.[*]The bolt required a 30-mm socket -- which is hard to find. But check out the Autozone tool for loan program (you pay for the tool but will receive you money back after return within 45 days)[*]I first try taking out the center bolt bycrawling underneath the car, but it was difficult and not enough leaverage to unbolt this part. I ended up finding an independent (or owner-operated) garage, and paying him $25 to replace the crack o-ring. It was worth it: professionally done and no furthermess to clean up.[*]The oil leak stopped!![/ul]
