Default 94 Accord not storing codes

Hi, new on this board. Glad I found it. The Honda forum I was on before just disappeared one day. My 94 Accord EX with 179,000 well cared for miles has started turning on the CEL- sometimes. When I tried to pull the code by jumping the the two pins as I have done before, nothing shows up,. In fact, if the light is on, and I turn off the car and then immediately re-start it, the code is gone, unless I drive for a while. Even then is does not always come back on. Car runs fine- same 30mpg on highway. Maybe just a little bit slower to start, but it is cold lately. Is there a way I can get this code with the engine running without screwing something up?

Does the light stay on like there are no codes stored?

When I jumper it, the light does not come on at all. (correction) The paper clip wasn't making a good connection. Now I get the codes; 12 and 17. Replaced the VSS about 6 months ago and the speedo and cruise control still work fine. Can't remember if the light was on when I used the cruise last time. Guess I'll start another thread, after checking the search function.

12 = EGR
Maybe the EGR passages are clogged? Look for threads about cleaning those out.

I pulled the EGR and EGR manifold. It was completely clogged. Followed the instructions from Hondadude ( great job on that little DYI) and so far it is starting quicker and idling smoother- with no codes. This is a great forum! Do you all accept donations? I'd hate to see this one go away for lack of funding, like the last one I was on.
