Are maintenance items; spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap in good shape?

Any check engine light? If so, get the code and post for help.

Clean IACV, EGR valve, and EGR manifold may help. Sticking EGR valve could cause temporary high idle and idle miss.

good luck

transmission and engine lights are not on, but the sppedometer works whenever it wants and it seems to do it more often when the speedo isn't working

Non-working speedometer suggests a flaky VSS, which should throw a check-engine light.
So... Does your check-engine light come on for 2 seconds when you first turn the key ON? (bulb-check)

yes it comes on for 2 seconds but goes back off
would the VSS cause the shaking though?

Does speed control work? If yes, the VSS is working.

good luck
