I hope I'm not boring anyone on this list but the VSS issue has been a bit difficult to solve. I was able to locate a '98 vss online at TAS auto but they had to order it from honda. The vss is quite different from pre '98 models requiring the shaft and sensor to be purchased as one unit. Cost out the door was $115 from the local dealer.... big ouch. TAS would have to pay $78 wholesale and add their costs plus shipping so I decided to buy local and only one of the two dealers had the unit.

I'm posting this info as a follow up information. The mechanical part of the vss is a shaft with a gear on the end that sits into the transaxel. The top side has the electrical component (sensor) but it can't be purchased separately. UG!

I'll install it tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

I had to remove the intake tubing (not the manifold) to get to it. I may have had to move other things out of the way, but I definetly remember moving the turbing. I also remember purchsing a super long phillips screw driver for the job. It was a pain, but it didn't take too long to do. I did not try attacking it from the bottom of the car.

Default RE: 98 Accord VSS - conclusion

I removed and replaced the VSS. It wasn't as bad as I had thought. I hate going blind into a project and it wasn't until I purchased the new VSS that I acutually saw the unit for real. It's very much unlike the pre '98 Accord VSS. Honda has made the drive unit and sensor a single unit... go figure!

Before I opened the new VSS (not refundable if opened), I performed the following checks:
1. Using a multimeter I probed the harness side of the plug to validate power is at the plug
2. Probed the pulse signal from the VSS. If working correctly while spinning the shaft the multi meter will show oscillations from 0 to 5 VDC. Mine failed this test so I replaced it.

I'm including a pic (I hope) so you can see the unit.

I know this is old thread but I think I am having a problem with my speed sensor as well. sometimes the speedo bounces around and sometimes it doesnt work. other times it works fine. does this sound like the speed sensor or the gauge cluster? I had a 96 accord that had the same problem and it was the gauge cluster not the speed sensor. any help would be great.

See if the cruise-control works OK while the gauge is bouncing.
