98 LX AT with a "whine"
i am a decent mechanic, been doing it for decades, but this one has me a tad lost. this 98 LX with the AT has a bad, loud moaning "whine" from about 20 mph on up. tone and pitch change when turning the car. first thought was CV's...visual check showed a cut boot and grease loss so...passenger side half-shaft replaced with new. sound didnt change. on the word of a "realy good Honda guy" i had the front wheel bearing replaced....sound didnt change.
does the "carrier" bearing on the pass. side have a history of going bad?
thoughts?....
is there a known "whine" that will come from this trans?....trans fluid has been changed with Honda fluid...sound almost disappears when turning left gets a tad louder turning right.
any help is much appreciated

I've heard of carrier bearings getting sloppy to the point that the seal leaks, but never noisy. Doesn't mean it can't happen. Put the front end up on jackstands, have a helper start the car and put it in gear, and try to pinpoint the noise. A stethoscope or a big screwdriver is helpful. Keep hair/clothes/fingers away from rotating stuff.
thanks for the responses...more confuddled now...i guess im using the wrong name for the suspected part...the passenger side drive shaft has a "mid shaft bearing" and this is what i am suspecting BUT it is "tight". this was the bearing i was referring to....if it is the "carrier bearing" is that a "remove the tranny" job?....
Yeah, but don't jump to conclusions. You can find the names of parts at Honda parts websites. Sons Honda is the easiest to navigate. I think the bearing you see is called the half shaft bearing. I have zero experience with them because my car doesn't have one, but I'm guessing it could whine when it fails. Pinpoint the noise or have a mechanic do it if you're uncomfortable getting underneath your car with the engine running and the trans in gear.
