Default ac clutch mystery

1997 honda accord v6

bla bla, let guy borrow car (we know what happened)
but during that time, the a/c belt broke

now after the rebuild, I decided to replace a/c belt
installed belt, started car, turned on ac and belt started smoking
removed belt

disconnected white/red wire from a/c black wire

can spin pulley with hand

jumped 12v hot to black wire on a/c and it just sparks where I touch the wire

a/c clutch not engaging

hooked ground to body of compressor and to neg. battery

touched 12v to black wire on a/c... still spark, not engaging

system is full of freon

need new compressor? need new clutch?

Im running out of money (now that my heads are being replaced on my explorer)

anymore test I can do to determine what I need to replace.

I do not want to replace the ENTIRE compressor if I don't need to

Thanks guys

If the pulley binds only when the a/c is turned on, then I'd think the clutch is working and the issue is with the compressor possibly binding.

You can try turning on the a/c with the engine running and no a/c belt on. See if the compressor pulley spins. Be very careful because you can get hurt if you come in contact with the other moving parts on the engine.

I've taken apart a compressor on my 95 4-cylinder and it is a pretty simple setup inside.

Ahhh my fingers!!!

If it doesn't spin, then what?

Can I beat on it with a hammer?

If it does spin, then what?

If it doesn't spin you can hit it with a hammer as it's kaput (yes they do go bad). The AC compressor in my son's Civic seized and locked the engine. Cutting the belt allowed the car to run again. He's since gotten a new compressor.
If it does spin, I guess you're rebuilding it, or looking elsewhere.
