I bought by 97 Honda Accord at 151K and have been running it fine without any major issues. The mileage on the car is now 164K.
I have done regular Oil Change and service on the car.
Recently I went to a mechanic , who told me that the timing belt on this car has not been replaced ever and should be done now.

He says if the belt has been replaced , it is mentioned somewhere on the engine or something like that.

My understanding was that the timing belt has to be changed at around 100K or so.
Is this possible that the car is running on the original timing belt ever since i.e. 164k miles ??
Or is it that he is taking me for a ride.

 

Yes, its possible it was never replaced. If so, you're on borrowed time. Get it done.

If it HAS been replaced, I don't know anything about marking the engine or anything. If it was replaced by a Honda dealer they might have the information in their computeers. But if a home-DIY guy did it himself, it won't be anywhere.

 

Agree. The only time I saw such a sticker was when I looked at the one I had just taped to the underside of the hood.

 

We've had this discussion numerous times w/ folks who've bought a high mileage Accord and failed to find out if TB had ever been changed.

There is no way to be certain the belt has been changed unless you have a written receipt describing the repair. Otherwise, you should have the TB, water pump, and tensioners changed asap.

I think a lot of people unload their cars at about timing belt time to avoid the expense. Better safe than sorry.
