Auto Transmission Fluid Type to Use?
For a 96 Honda, Accord, Auto Transmission, do we still use type Dexron II to add to the transmission fluid? What brand (s) do you like, or is the best? Penns, Q.State, Mobil, etc. Old Transmission guy once told me Mobil was the best for him. It is now Exxon Mobil company.
What is the best way to check the fluid level... Normal running temp with eng OFF... In park with eng RUNNING... etc? THANKS
UPDATE: Good info from both members... I have found that Honda Auto Transmissions are a bit hard to get along with, sooo I think it is better to go with genuine Honda ATF to be safe. BUT note this... Honda, as all the others, is not in the ATF making business. They go to someone and tell them what they want and that oil company makes it. Same for eng oils, they all do it this way because it is the cheapest way! In the pass I worked at Dealers and we knew this fact, the company would get bids from different oil companies and take the lowest. Remember the oil company can not use the same mix do to patens. So in this case genuine is the safe way to go.
Thanks to DR. D as the ATF check work out good. I found that a long handle needle nose pliers work good to reach the hard to get to dip stick. If you are going to rebuild any Auto Trans here is a trick... WITH ENG COLD, pour in a can of Berryman B-12 (ChemTool) then drive for 20- 30 mins (the B-12 will be gone- evaporated) and then start the tear down. You want have to clean the inside, it will be clean. Seen this time after time. Im not sure about doing a trans flush with it, call the factory (B-12) first. Same for the eng. Regards
