Exclamation Bad PCM/ECU???

Hello Community,

I'm struggling to narrow down a problem I'm having with my vehicle.
Vehicle: 2003 Honda Accord Ex - 2.4L (4 Cylinder)
Issue: Car can NOT get out of Park. The button is not allowing me to push it in so I am unable to change to any other setting, R, N, D, etc..
What I have done so far.
1. Vehicle starts ok. I can over ride the shift lock by pressing the button to the side. Once I am able to go to D, the drive is ok with the exception that it does not get out of 1st gear.
2. No Check engine light goes on. but when I read pending codes, it get a P1122 - Throttle position sensor higher than expected.
3. I have researched this issue online and I was able to follow the steps in the service manual for "troubleshooting shift lock system circuit"
  • Although I do not have access to an HDS, I was able to do my best with following the other steps (so there is probably some mis readings on my part based on those steps I was unable to do)
  • From the steps below, I successfully followed steps 3, 4, 5, 6 (measured 12V), 7, 8 ( NO battery voltage - measured ~0V), 10, 12, 13 (I measured ~40ohm so "YES Continuity)
    • I'm not sure if I needed to perform step 11 "JUMP the SCS Line with the HDS" to have steps 12 and on be correct.

  • Assuming I did perform all this correctly, I'm now at "SUBSTITUE A KNONW-GOOD PCM and RECHECK".
4. If I have made a mistake in my procedure and you have experience with this issue, I'm paying attention
5. The cost for a new OEM PCM is ~ 1100 online. Dealer ship charges ~110 for programming and 70 for installation + 250 for diagnosis. Another option I have seen is with a company called Module Mechanics, where you purchase a plug/play OEM replacement PCM. I would purchase one for ~ $420, but I need to ship my old one to them so they can get all the car info and xfer it to the new one. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE DOING THIS? Definitely a better option.
6. If there is anything else I can try that I haven't yet, please let me know.

Appreciate you guys/gals/all other pronouns

thank you

Issue may be due to the TPS sensor. See some of the information in this other thread:https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...acement-57012/

There are aftermarket TPS sensors. Rockauto has some very reasonable prices on them.

Redbull-1,

I read the thread from the link you provided. I have performed the Idle reset procedure shortly before this issue and it did not improve my idle. I can try your suggestion of removing the connector to the TPS and start the car to see if I can get it out of Park. If it does remove it, do you think I can link this issue to the TPS? It would coincide with the pending code I saw.

Also, the issue with over riding the shift lock and driving the vehicle without having the car get out of 1st gear would still show an issue with the PCM as the PCM also controls the transmission to my knowledge.
Thanks for your feedback.

Depending on the code, the PCM may not let your transmission shift past 1st gear as a safety precaution. Your car is probably in limp mode.

PAhonda,

Today, I was able to diagnose the TPS sensor based on the diagram below. I was able to measure ~ 5V across terminals 1 and 3 of the wire harness. However, when I measured the resistance of pins 1 and 2 on the sensor side, I measured ~1.5K. Step 12 says if it DOES NOT measure between 0.5-0.9KOhm, than go to Step 29. I measured 1.5K. Step 29 is to replace the entire Throttle Body. So tomorrow I plan to use my Dremel and create cutouts on the "screws" that hold the OEM TPS sensor in place and see if I can adjust it so the resistance can be reduced and calibrate it. I also did attempt to try to start the vehicle without the connector in place (per REDBULL-1 link provided) to see if I am able to get the car out of Park. And this did WORK. So at this point, it looks like the TPS Sensor could be the culprit.

I resolved the issue and it was a bad TPS Sensor. Bought one from Oreilly installed it and calibrated it. Car runs great.
Thank you for your help.
