Default Broken door - inside push rod

Through a rather freak accident (too humerous and frustrating to explain), I believe I have broken the rod connecting to the latch assembly on the driver's side door in my 1997 Honda Accord EX 4DR. The rod connected to the interior handle is cleary detached from the assembly, and appears to have "snapped" off. It is just a free hanging rod now. Obviously, I have to exit the car throught the passenger side, which is no way to live life. The outside door handle still works fine.

Is this within thescope of DIY repair, or am I better off taking this to a good mechanic? I know I am going to get gouged on this one, but I feel it may be a bit out of my grasp to fix.... any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

We LIVE for humorous & frustrating stories!

Usually the worst PITA is getting the inner door panel off, with all the silly hidden fasteners. Hondaautomotiveparts.com drawings don't do a super good job of showing where they all are located. Helm repair book is usually excellent showing exactlywhere to pry to get those apart.

easy fix.... we just need to know what part snapped, from the sounds of it the handle assembly is already off so either go to a junk yard and find a new one or just replace the broken part, doesn't sound like you need to remove the door panel so I'd say you can do it fairly easily (the repair that is) if you have the door handle assembly off already then just to to a dealership and show them what broke and say you need a new one....

the bent end of the rod[#20/40] should drop into a hole on the latch; then there is a little plastic clip[#23/41] that swivels around to clip over the rod and'retain' it in place.
with the inner door latch removed from it's little pocket you should be able to use a pair of pliers to grab the rod and open the door.
The good news is that the dealer now sells that little clip as a single part for about $2; it used to only come with the latch assy.
Thats why all us old geezers saved up a dozen of them in our top tool box drawer. LOL

EDIT: ooops wrong part number in the attached pic
driver side clip is P/N 72174-SM4 -003
