i have a 2001 honda accord 4 cyl. and ive done a series of tests to diagnose my no start issue. my question is can i test a crankshaft sensor without taking the belts, crank pulley and timing cover off? this sensor is located under bottom timing cover. the car cranks over like it wants to start. upon all electrical tests the only one that has failed so far is the distributor test (if i did it correctly). plug wires and spark plugs get spark, but when testing for ohms i receive 0 reading. if this distributor is working properly should i not receive spark? the rotor and cap work fine too (there new). the ignition control module and ignition spring tested good as well (volts and ohms).

This is a 2001, correct? That is what you typed but your signature is something else?

For the '01, the connector - 4 pin I think- is outside of the cover so that is where you test it from.

In your post you say you have spark. What codes or issue are you having?

 

yes. im working on my girlfriends 2001 honda accord. i tried pulling the codes without turning the car on... since the car wont start. but the jumper wire method according to the haynes book didnt work. so no codes. it sounds like it wants to start. its getting fuel and spark.

 

so the engine is cranking?

The car should still start even with a bad crank sensor. The TDk and CYP sensor are backups. The car should run but it will be in a limp mode with a CEL.

You are not getting the right spark or fuel.

 

many sites online are saying a bad cam sensor... or crank sensor can cause a car to not start. is this true?...at last true with this year and make? anybody know for sure or is a certified honda technitian? im in dier need of experience advice since we dont have the extra money for a mechanic. i suppose i could always buy a distributor and crank senseor. and start trial and erroring with those then return whichever isnt the issue.

do hondas have an ASD relay? i heard that if this turns off it means either cam and or crankshaft sensors are bad. this true too?

didn't mention anywhere if you've checked for fuel? have you?

 

a friend checked it one day to see if its getting fuel and said it is. but i didnt ask if that ment its getting fuel to the injectors or to the spark plugs. is there a difference or if it gets to the injectors does this means its also getting fuel to the spark plugs?

 

Check for spark at the plugs, many ways to do this. You want to see a good "blue" spark.

Pull the air intake off the throttle body, open the butterfly, spray carb cleaner into the tb and then try to start.....does it.

 

yes its getting blue spark. ill try the tb/carb test tom. when i go over there.
