yea the temp gauge reads fine, im going to try and swap the overdrive sensor out and see if that helps.

There are some transmission codes that do not cause the D4 light to flash. I would use a thin paperclip or a piece of wire to check for codes the OBD1 way. See the DIY section about how to get CEL codes.
