Had a close encounter with a road sign. Took off driver side mirror and put some good dents and scrapes in the door – see pictures. Replacing the mirror was an easy job. Now what to do with the dents and scrapes. Before this the exterior was unblemished.
The estimate from my body shop to pound out the dents and prime/pain/clear coat/blend with rest of door is way too high, approximately $1,200. I can live with the dents, but want to avoid future rust and cover the spots with primer/paint/clear coat.
I’m not sure filling in the dents with bonda makes any sense. But I am open to suggestions.
What is the best way to do this since it is more than just scratches? Any good online videos of someone doing this?
Or asked another way, what would you do if it was your car?
Just saw this post. You definitely do not want to fill those dents with bondo. I think the max depth of bondo is less than 1/8 inch thick.
You may want to get a quote to pull those dents out from a paintless dent removal place to get the metal back in somewhat the original shape. You will be surprised on what a good PDR person can do.
Then you can sand the bare metal, prime just the metal, then use either a base/clear to protect the metal, or maybe an epoxy. It won't look great unless you do some bondo work, then try to blend/feather in new base then put a layer of clear on it. You can make it look really good depending on how much time you want to put into the body work.
