Default D4 light stays on

D4 light stays on gear selector & car shifts from 1st to 3rd or may stay in 3rd. I disconnect battery & reconnect & it shifts fine untill car is turned off & then shifts crazy again. Is this the Automatic Transmission Control Unit gone bad? If so is this a easy fix & how much is this part?

Could be....but a couple of things first.

Is this a Pinto? What year and model do you have?

Then, what codes, see the DIY section on how to get them, do you have?

You may have a failed TCU. There was a problem w/ this generation of Accords w/ failed electronics on the TCU board. D4 light stays on, and when you may hear main fuel relay clicking. Trans will display failure to shift. See following link for details.

Honda Electronic Transmission Problem- Troubleshoot, Inspection, Repair, Replace.

Used TCU's can be found on ebay and car-part.com at very reasonable prices, if your's is bad.

good luck

i had this problem on my 93. I did the test in the above Tranny link. I jumped the diaganostic plug (no codes), test and cleaned the soleniods on top and front of tranny (clicked when connected to voltage). So from there I went on ebay and got a rebuilt TCU. I opened the old one it had 1 burnt piece of the circuit board, got it replaced and the car shifts like new.

That was fast. How were you able to pick up a TCU so quickly?

good luck
