Hi All,

My 94 Accord technical manual calls for using a special tool (SCS short connector) PN: 07PAZ-0010100 in order to do various ECU diagnostics and also to perform engine timing etc. The manuals explicitly warns against using only a wire to short the wiring going to the service connector. They want you purchase the shorting tool to perform the function. I examined the connector a found about four wires leading from it but only two holes to the connector. So it seems as though there should be no issue just using a homemade wire to short the two sides of the connector, i.e. no other wires to hit. Is there some bad thing that will happen like blowing the airbags if this is shorted improperly? It look like most guys do just what Honda doesn't want.

 

I use a service connector but then again I work on Honda's. Honestly though, in my 95' I carry a paper clip in the glove box in the event I ever need to pull a code while traveling. A good size paper clip works fine, you just want the ends of the paper clip where it will make contact with the connector to be the same length so that contact is made at approximately the same time. You don't have to buy the service connector. Next time you are at a salvage yard you can grab a two pin connector from the salvage car, twist the wires together, and shazam, you have a service connector.

 

Shop manual is conservatively avoiding possibility of shorting the jumper to ground accidentally. This would blow a fuse only however.

The 2-wire connector is installed into a plastic holder w/ other wires and can be released for access. However, the SCS (how do they get SCS from Service Check Connector?).
