Default Distributors, ignitors, reliability, and getting stranded....

Ok, I installed the 3rd JY distributor (dizzy) today on my 93 Accord LX in the 100+k miles I have owned this car.. This car has the external coil from the dizzy. I have a few questions...

1. Can it be adapted to the internal coil dizzy? The JY (Pull-A-Part) had many more of these still on the cars, where the one I needed they had either been removed or ravaged for the internal modules. This leads me to think the internal design is more reliable. It also makes me really dislike those people that go thru and take all of them even though they only need one, and probably didn't even pay for any of them since they could fit in a pocket of a pair of baggy pants..

2. Has anyone ever adapted this ext coil dizzy to a different module? I know you can use a GM HEI module in place of the Ford Duraspark module, and it will last much longer. Ignition modules are all about the same thing, usually with minor differences inside, depending on if it is ECU controlled or not. If so, anyone have a link?

3. Is there a design flaw like a weak ground that causes these to fail? How can I fix this issue?

You may ask why the JY dizzy, and not just replace the modules. It seems to be cheaper to go get a used for $35-75 compared to the $100+ for the modules. These were the prices I got about 8 years ago when the first one failed. Plus it is easier to swap out a dizzy along the road than it is to rebuild one roadside.

I think that you would need to compare the wiring diagrams for the LX/DX with the external coil and the EX with the internal coil. I am not sure if the engine computer handles things differently with an internal vs external coil.

I didn't think the coil/dist difference was in the LX/EX engines. I thought most of the ones I saw were in the LX cars there. Might have to look again.

Thanks for the reply!

The LX and DX use an external coil. The EX uses an internal coil.
