Default Engine sputters when flooring accelerator

Hi There- I purchased a really nice 1996 Accord with 180,000 miles, has the 4cyl motor. Not knowing the engine service history, went and had the timing belt, and water pump replaced. Everything runs good except when I mash the gas pedal to the floor when passing a car. The motor sputters, almost seems like motor will shut off, happens for a minute or so as I let off the gas. Then runs fine as long as I don't floor gas pedal. I get a service engine light also which will shows up for a couple days, then turns off. Some one said to run a few tank fulls of gas with Lucas Oil gas additive to help clean the fuel system, have'nt done this yet. I was hoping to check with you all for any advice for solving this issue. Thanks

Get the codes. The 96 4 cyl is a strange model, it has both the OBDI and OBDII connectors. So you can still use the "paper clip" method-see DIY Section for location and procedure. Or call you local parts store and see if they scan the codes for free. Once you have the code(s) post it back up and someone will be able to help find the answer for you....
