Fuel Gauge works intermittently in Accord 1990
Hello to you all in HAF. i have notice for sometime now maybe a 8 months now, the fuel gauge needle seems to behave irregular. When the fuel in the tank seems to go empty the needle tends to point towards 1/4. But after putting some litres of fuel say 7 to 10 litres in the tank the needle moves to empty[E]. This can be deceitful. please what might be the likely cause to this kind of fuel gauge reading. And at times i have run out of fuel thinking that there is still fuel in the tank due to this erroneous reading from the fuel gauge. Your suggestion on this will be highly appreciated. Is honda accord 1990 model, auto transmission, 4cyl, mileage 280,000. 1.8 Lx. Additional problems with the car is the constant decrease in the level of engine oil every week and alot of smoke from the exhaust pipe. i was told the only way to resolve this is to replace some rings and the oil level will remain constant. we check all round there is no point where it is leaking from. this is my second honda accord car being use by my wife. the other is a 1998 sedan honda accord. hope to hear from you soon
As far as the fuel level goes often times the older cars get a sulfur build up on the float in the fuel tank. There are a couple of things you can try. 1- use a have dose of a high quality fuel system cleaner (BG 44k is good at cleaning the sulfur and preventing the float from sticking). 2- in the trunk you should find a bolt on cover for the fuel pump. You can remove the pump assembly and thoroughly clean the float with a throtle body cleaner spray and make sure it slides freely, you might even need to use a scrubber if it is real bad. It is less likely, BUT it could be electrical including the speedo head/gauge cluster.
As far as the smoke it is likely that it is the valve stem seals.
