Default gear stick stuck

Hi guys,

I have an automatic 97 Honda Accord. I've recently tool off all the plastic covers including the gear stick to install the stereo system on my Accord. However, when I put everything back, the gear stick now stuck on P (when I start the engine, I cannot move from P to D or any other positions). To be able to drive my car, now I have to do either of the following 2 methods:

1. Before turn off the engine, I have to leave the gear stick on N (natural), I can then move it to D (drive) later on.
2. Insert the key into the "Gear-locked" position which is located near the gear stick, then shift it to D.

As I found either of the above ways is too annoyed. Would anyone know how to fix this problem.

Thanks

When you step on the brake pedal, do you hear the gear shift make a click? It should click, indicating that the solenoid is working and unlocking the gear shift.

Did you take the shift **** off? That might also be the problem. The chrome button pushes a shaft down to move the selector as well.

Hi, I just read your postin reply to this question. My question to you, since you appear to know about these things, is similar. When I attempt to take my2000 Accord out of park,I have to step on the brake pedal many times before I can depress the button and shift out of park.Would this be a solenoid problem as well or something else? This problem only began yesterday but it seems to be taking many more attempts to get it to work each day. Where can I find some information about solenoid replacement, ah, even where is it at? (I don't normally work on cars but if it's something I can do, why not!) Just a girl trying to save a few bucks!
Thanks for any insight into this solution would be appreciated.

The switch that operates this circuit is located up at the hinge of the brake pedal. Its like a button that the pedal hits when you take your foot OFF the brake pedal. It also operates the brake light in back. Have someone watch your brake lights while you try this. If the brake lights dont work together with the shift lock not working, then it might be a bad switch. Or the switch is mounted loosely so it can move around? Or the wiring to the switch is loose?
