Default head gasket replacement '99 Accord

I'm getting ready to order my parts for head gasket replacement on my '99 Accord 2.3. I'm going to get the gasket set so I get all the gaskets and seals I need. Am I supposed to replace the head bolts when I do this also, and how many are there if I do?

here is a past topic about someone replacing their head gasket. some people say they are re-usable. most likely there is a way to measure your bolts to see if they are still within specifications. you will want to check to make sure that yours are within specifications before re-using them. you would need to have a manual to know what those specifications are so you can measure them while it's apart.

Search 5WHBskK_F3o on YouTube for a good video on replacing the head gasket and what to do with the cylinder head bolts.

Thanks for the replies. The bolts are about $5 each, so I was hoping to be able to reuse them.

Reuse the bolts, and spend the money for head rebuild; new valve stem seals, valves reseated, check for cracks, and shave head flat. This is insurance to avoid a "re-do". Guess why I'm such a strong advocate?

You're going to spend probably 10-20 hrs labor to do this job, unless you're a pro, so don't skimp on parts and preparation.

If you don't have a shop manual, you need one. Check automanualsource on ebay for an emanual for your model; $21.99 for a quick download.

good luck

So I had the head cleaned, pressure tested, and milled. I did not have the valves done, it was running so well I didn't spend the $125 to have it done. Do I need to adjust the valves? I don't see why I would, but I thought I would ask the body of knowledge that resides here

If valve train was not removed, then no adjustment should be necessary.

It's easy enough to check the loose (camshaft lobe not contacting rocker arm) valves and confirm they are correct. This is usually about 1/2 of the valves.

good luck
