Yes you can go to synthetic but with your car being a 96, and presumed high miles, I don't think that the benefit would outweigh the extra cost involved. If there is any seepage or leaks they may be more pronounced after switching to M1. With dino oils as good as they are today I just don't think you would reap any real benefit from switching at this point. I am pro synthetic and have it in every piece of equipment I have including the weedeater but they were all purchased new and switched over to synthetic shortly after break in.
I suppose it would depend on how long you plan to keep the car and if you want to go for extended drain intervals. If you're not planning to go past 5000 miles then stick with Dino. The choice is yours of course. The above is all just somewhat educated opinion----- others may disagree entirely.
