Is it true if the brake light switch does not work that the shifter will not allow you to move from Park without using the release switch? I think I have a bad switch, but the shifter does work. I do not have any brake lights or center high mount stop light, but the fuse and bulbs appear to be OK.

 

The brake light switch was unplugged on my daughter's '93 Accord and it would not shift out of park without the release switch. I don't know about the newer generations, my '99 is a MT.

 

It's still true with new auto-trans cars. Federal law.

So that probably means KHBarry's brake-pedal switch is OK, but the circuit it broken somewhere "downstream" before the brake lights.

Since then I did do an ohmeter check on the switch and it does appear to be working. Is there only one fuse, the "Stop" fuse, 20 amp, in this circuit. I had a mechanic say that the next place to check is in the turn signal, steering column area. Does that sound feasible?

 

Please check or replace the bulbs (bulbs are cheap). Is the "warning" on for the brake lamp?...then there are two fuses involved in the brakes.
