Hoping for someone's assistance.

My car shuts off when I am braking and approaching a stop sign or red light.
But when my gas tank is full I don't have this problem, it only happens when fuel gauge is approaching 1/2 a tank.

I took it to my mechanic and he told me it needed gas and the gauge was broken. It's not the gauge, because I only need to put 6-7 gallons before it tops off when fill my tank. I'm not quite sure what could be doing this.

Any ideas? And how can I fix it?
