Default IACV/Throttle Issue

My 1998 Honda Accord EX Sedan was idling quite rough... so, in an attempt to fix it, I took apart the throttle body, upper part of the intake manifold, and IACV. I cleaned all these with carb cleaner, replaced the gaskets on the throttle body and the upper manifold. I did not replace the o-ring in the IACV because I couldn't get my hands on one.

NOW the car will not hold a steady idle. I have attempted to reset the idle adjustment screw on the throttle body. The car sits at an idle around 1500 rpm for a few seconds before beginning to rev between 1500 and 2700 rpm in Park. It does not rev in gear, but holds an idle around 1500 rpm.

Did i damage something I was unaware of? Did I skip a step? What are my next steps to figuring out the problem?

Thanks for any help you can offer, folks. I have never posted here before... or done work on my intake system.

Welcome to HAF.

You need to check for any vac leaks - around the tb or intake, also check the pcv hose as well. Check the cable on the tb to be sure it is set properly.

Next, be sure to bleed the air from the cooling system.

It sounds like you might have adjusted the idle-air screw on the throttlebody while the IACV was plugged in & working? If so, the idle-control system was fighting against your adjustment.

Look in the DIY section for a post about setting the "BASE" idle.
