Default Intermittent brake warning light

Hey Gang,

About a week ago my 2001 V6 Accord EX had the "Brake" warning light illuminate on the dash. Thinking the brake fluid was low I added some (although the level wasn't what I'd call low), and the warning light went away; for about a day. Since then it illuminates and goes out in a very random pattern; not quite sure whether it is a fluid level sensor, the Parking Brake sensor, or something else entirely.

Any thoughts?

The "BRAKE" indicator lamp issue can be caused by either:

  • brake fluid level switch intermittently stuck closed; providing ground to circuit
  • parking brake switch intermittently stuck closed; providing ground to circuit
  • faulty safety indicator circuit (built into gauge assembly)
  • intermittent short in wiring or circuit
Try disconnecting the Grn/Red wire at the brake fluid reservoir to try to isolate/narrow if that is the issue.

I don't know if 2001 still has the actual float in the reservoir? Sometimes the float drags on the plastic mesh screen. I think some trimming on the screen (or a new screen) might have been the solution for some people.

It's not the "brake lamp" warning, right? That's a whole different warning.
