If your car runs reasonably well and has no check engine light, then something is wrong to deliver such low mileage. Details of car; carb or fuel injected, trim, any mods? Put them in your signature.

Things to check or consider replacing:
1) fuel lines, carb or fuel injectors for leaks
2) brakes for dragging brake
3) tires for at least 30 psi
4) spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor if they are over 80K miles
5) O2 sensor should be replaced if it's original or over 100K miles.
6) air filter (clean or replace)
7) check choke plate is fully opening on carbed engine

Mileage is greatly affected by driving style. If you frequently accelerate heavily from start, go for every gap in traffic, and brake hard to stop your mileage is probably correct.

good luck

Personally I'd also add fuel filter(s) -two on the DX or LX, one on the LXi-to the list....my 3rd gen's average 30 mpg per tank....both FI and carb. I'm sure the FI's would get better if I could keep the kids from getting "on them".

Which makes me ask how you are calculating the mpg?

Thanks for the reply. It is a 88 Accord LX.
88,000 miles.
Replaced carbuerator-did not need it-fuel filters were clogged.
Seems to be racing in neutral.
I think it's time I went to a Honda dealer-local guys try but I think are not up to it.

I calculate the mileage by setting odometer at zero on fill up -noting how much gas use at next fill up and dividing mileage from zero by amount of fill up.

Ok, was just wondering how you came up with the city...hwy mileage? I'd call that the "avg per tank".

It is Accord LX.
Any help is appreciated.

I think it is carb because when I replaced the carb there was some discussion about the vacuam lines.

LX is carb'd.

A majority of the items posted by TX are still in play....can you answer what of those have been done or replaced?
