my car jerks forward, RPM jumps to 4000
hi, I notice this morning when I am driving at 20km/hrs, the accord suddenly speed forward without accelerating while the RPM jumps to 4000 and quickly returns back to 1000 to 2000. I have never experience such high rpm readings at low speed. Something is wrong somewhere. Is a 98 accord sedan, 4cylinders, auto trans., mileage 207,000. I hope the transmission is not failing. Yesterday it moves smoothly with no jerking. Please kindly respond. Thanks

this evening the accord still speed forward on slow acceleration while the rpm revs to 4,000. I saw my mechanic today he said probably we need to change the spark plugs, I have been using the old plugs for a year now. He thinks there is no problem with the automatic transmission. I need a quick possible solutions to this problem from you guys. Thanks

How does the fluid look? Clean? Fluid level is OK?
You could change the transmission fluid, and use Honda fluid.
But Honda did have some problems in 1998-2002 with transmissions. It might need to be rebuilt.
I'm no expert for automatics, so let's see if someone else chimes in with a better answer.

Like JimBlake mentioned, see how the fluid looks like and possibly try changing the transmission fluid with Honda fluid.
A lot of the issues with the 6th generation Accord (98-2002) automatic transmission were due to damaged differential carrier bearings that can cause all sorts of A/T related problems such as leaks, transmission noise, or erratic shifting. Generally, if it is damaged differential carrier bearings, only fix is a reman A/T or another used one.
Pieces from damaged carrier bearings can contaminate the ATF, fouling the shift and lock-up valves, which would cause erratic shifting.

we will still be working on the car tomorrow with the mechanic. I am looking forward on converting it to manual transmission which is more reliable. I forgot to mention that the D4 light wasn't blinking. thanks
