Default Mysterious Brake issue

1996 Accord EX 243,000 miles
Here are the symptoms:
Occasionally the brake pedal will go to the floor with almost no stopping power, usually one wheel stops only. Happens more at slower speeds.
After pumping the brake pedal a few times the pedal is hard and brakes are great. They hold pressure and don't leak.
We have bled the entire system including the abs. It's NOT the master cylinder. I have replaced this 3 times.
The abs system works.

Did you use a genuine Honda Master Cylinder? Why did you replace it 3 times?

Sounds like classic master cylinder failure to me...

Default How do you bleed the ABS?

I didn't know you could bleed the ABS. I have almost the same problem, but I haven't done anything with the ABS.

Broke, what car you got?
Beginning in 1998 there's no longer any separate bleeding for ABS.

Mine is a 1996 Accord. I discovered that the ABS resevoir is below "min" level.

I just added brake fluid (Dot 3). It took a while for the fluid to flow into the resevoir, but it is at max now. Should I bleed the ABS system? I would think there is a leak somewhere.

Wow! You're good. I saw the bleed screw, but I didn't want to do anything without being sure. If this doesn't fix it, what's the next step? Should I check for leaks? Thanks so much for your help!

YES, check for leaks.

You might have some plugs in the side of the modulator (not shown separately in that picture). I've heard about those leaking, but hasn't happened to me.

Another leak can be O-rings at the bottom of the accumulator (#23) or at the pump (#24).

We're getting away from the original poster's issue. Garretthes, what's new?

AAAHHH my post is gone!
Just kidding, Desert. I'll write something up again over there. I've dissappeared a couple posts myself when I was figuring out how to move stuff.

OK, I re-wrote those instructions & put them in the DIY-Answers area.
