I'm not sure how beneficial it would be to have one that reads engine data, so my guess is a basic one that reads and clears. Thanks...

I was looking into buying one, since I recently got an OBD2 vehicle.
The Actron scanners seem to be popular.
Actron CP9125 - Very basic code reader and erase ~$50 on Amazon.
Actron CP9550 - Has some more features reading some engine data. ~$70 on Amazon.
I like looking on Amazon, because the products get a lot of reviews that you can read to get a feel of what people think about the products.

I purchased a Innova CanOBD2 3100 Scanner, very easy to use, although I wish it came with a case to hold the tool and necessary cables. A little pricier than the other choices, but the reviews are almost uniformly good.
Amazon.com: Equus 3100 Innova CanOBD2 Diagnostic Tool: Automotive
Although when I think about it, cars have enough computing horsepower and display ability these days that car makers could show you these codes and what they mean on the radio screen in real time. Could be added to most new cars for under $10, I'll bet.
