Default No More Resonator...Am I going to regret it?

Seems a bit buzzier in the vehicle, but have not driven it a long period of time yet.I removed the resonator and put a straight pipe on,only because a weld broke that someone did in the past, and it was just easier for me to slip this pipe in place.

I do have a thrush weld muffler in the back, welded on the stock exhaust, which is otherwise factory up to the manifold,so it already had a bit of a loud tone. Now I took the resonator off and not sure if I can repair it yet.

If it does turn out the resonator needs to be reinstalled,is there any other cheaper alternatives to the resonator besides a straight pipe?

Old style straight through glasspack muffler maybe? My current resonator needs to be rewelded to be reused and the shops around here dont want to mess with it,they want to sell me an exhaust system instead,so forget them.I need to buy me a welder soon!

How is your experience without it?

Drive it for a bit......You decide. I'll guess at steady speed that the noise will be too much for you.

If the "drone" is too much, yes I'd start with just adding the "glasspack". At the same time, the OE pipe isn't that much and you only need to deal with five bolts and two gaskets....ok, yes the three bolts on the back of the converter are not that fun to deal with.

I drove the car for a 60 mile round trip....dang...its..well.. noisy.

And I have hearing loss as it is,so its worse than I thought.

It did pick up a SOTP feel of power but might just be in my head.Feels torquey somewhere more than before.

Lucky for me,I had my exhaust off a few times, the bolts have been cleaned and heavily anti seized,so all of the pipes from the manifold, converters and flanges come off easy without breaking nuts,or rusting shut.

Also, the car has been in KY all of its life and has not been exposed to road salt ,like when I lived in the NE regions years back. Those pipes rusted in one season or two up there. There is very little rust, and its mainly only the rear sway bar, nothing on the uni frame or support beams.

I had my resonator and cat converter removed welded straight pipe to the muffler. But eventually decided to weld a new converter back in. The power seemed alittle better but I couldnt deal with the buzz. If your dead set on keeping your pipe as is . They sell some sound deading tape that u can line your trunk or bottom of car with to eliminate the sound. Also maby a local junkyard can pull you a new resonator for you. Or theres alot of people out there putting after market catbacks on. You can probably find a whole system on ebay/amazon for a decent price

Thanks Jrox,

I have been looking at some of those exhaust systems online and many appear to be well made for the money they are asking.

My car's tune is top notch, and the inside of the cat converter honeycomb looks nearly new despite 180,000 miles, and there is no sign it was ever replaced before. The resonator itself is in good shape, except for the weld that broke through, one side was not done correctly, and I may just have a buddy of mine weld it back with a full beaded seal.

Problem is,my buddy works some crazy hours and never has much time to do anything.Im looking at buying myself a welder from HF soon.

Back to the buzzing, theres no way sound material would fully conceal this, its making my rearview mirror vibrate at certain rpms.Besides,it would be heavy, add weight and cost too much in the end.Nice suggestion though, yet would really be easier to just fix it correctly or install a glass pack to deaden the buzzkill. One more thing, engine braking is occuring a bit more. When I let off the gas in 5th gear, the car sort of feels like its gonna slow down due to the resonance changes. It wont coast as easily as before.

Same thing happened on my Corvette years back, too much flow from my full exhaust mods, caused that braking slowing down feeling when letting off the gas.
