Likely a problem w/ the gauge panel. VSS drives speedometer and odometer, so odo should work. I've had mine "stick" once or twice and had to restart by fiddling w/ the trip odometer reset and thumping top of dash.

Tachometer is driven by distributor ignitor signal output and may be possible that wiring was damaged during engine replacement. Blu wire from ignitor should send a pulsed voltage to the gauge panel. Circuit is not described, but I would expect 0-12V pulses.

good luck
