Oil Leak/dump!

Oil Leak/dump!
My daughter's 2000 Accord 4 cyl. started dumping oil a few days ago. I didn't find out the details right away. The oil was leaking from the lower timing belt cover.
I read up here and found that it was most likely the front balance shaft seal.
I had done the timing belt back around 90,000 miles with guidance from this forum. Now I think is at around 170,000 miles now.
Tonight I started getting into the timing belt job and found some issues.
The balance belt was broken and the balance shaft seal was not sealing anything.
I haven't set anything to top dead center yet. Now I don't quite know how to make sure the rear balance shaft is in the right position.
I put a bolt in the hole on the back of the engine to line the shaft up. However, I was able to get the bolt in the hole in more than one position and I don't know which is right.
I could use some tips. I didn't know about the seal retaining bracket the other time I did the timing belt so I didn't get one.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
David

See this link, it is pretty much the same procedure for your car:

I think there is a front balance shaft seal retainer that you should have installed when you go to do the repair.
Get the crank and camshaft to TDC. There should be a mark on one of the teeth of the rear balance shaft sprocket. Can you take a pic head on on that sprocket.

I took more pictures and yes there is a mark. However, I can't see what to line it up to.
I ordered a kit last night that contains the retainer.

When I did the timing belt the first time I had no idea I needed a retainer on the front seal. I am not a mechanic. I only do this out of necessity.
I appreciate all of the help I get here.
Redbull, I did find that write up prior to starting this adventure. I followed it pretty well and think it is wonderful. The pictures are great. I don't understand why Haynes can't get good pictures. If there pictures were clear and I guess in color, it would be worth more money to sell. It would be a hell of a lot more useable. But yes that is great.
I still don't know how to line up the back sprocket. The write up seems to assume as does haynes that it was already in the right position, just lock it down

Go download the 1994 Accord service manual from the Sticky link at the top of this forum. Although, it is for the previous generation Accord, the procedure there is essentially the same. Pages 6-22 & 6-23 has more info. and pictures regarding the alignment of the pointers and grooves.

They're all right as long as the bolt goes straight in. The rear balance shaft is geared and the bolt will go in at three different positions of the sprocket. Any one of the three positions will work.

I appreciate that. It goes in at 2 oclock, 8 o clock and 4:30-5:00 ish. The 2:00 and 8:00 seem the smoothest.
