Oil (?) under the distributor

Oil (?) under the distributor
Hello,
I have been meaning to ask this question, and it slips my mind every time. I have noticed oil or sludge around and under the distributor in my engine bay. It does not look like a normal thing but is it something I should be worried about? Is it possible to clean it? I was thinking of buying some de-greaser, spraying it on and around the distributor and then spraying it with water. I would appreciate experts opinions about this issue before doing anything like that.
Thanks

RE: Oil (?) under the distributor
There are two sources of oil leakage by the distributor. The distributor drive shaft has an oring where it engages the cylinder head and there is an internal oil seal in the distributor. Drive shaft oring is easy to replace by pulling distributor. The internal oil seal is quite involved, but if you're game I have a pdf file w/ instructions. Not terribly difficult but many steps.
Hard to be sure from a picture, but yours may be an internal seal leak. Oil appears to be draining from distributor housing.
good luck

RE: Oil (?) under the distributor
thanks for the quick reply, TexasHonda. Should I start with replacing the drive shaft O-ring first? Also, where can I find that PDF, just in case? and is cleaning that oil leak before doing anything a good idea?

PM your email address and I'll forward the pdf file.
I agree you should replace the distributor shaft oring first. You can also remove distributor cap and check for oil inside the distributor. If yes, then internal seal has failed.
good luck

RE: Oil (?) under the distributor
If it were the internal shaft seal, the oil would show up INSIDE the distributor.
Clean it up & watch where it leaks from. Take off the distributor cap & see if its oily inside.

RE: Oil (?) under the distributor
From my experience, I would just replace the entire distributor switching out the ignitor and module. I replaced the failed seal that causes the leak and ran into the other problem that the leaking oil causes. The oil will over time, cause the wire casings in the distributor to become brittle. When you go to replace the seal which really isn't hard, you will inevitably crack off the casings causing the wires to short out. Just order the distrubutor from Majestic Honda and be done with it.
