Default P1157 Code on 2003 Accord LX

Hi All,I got P1157 on my Accord 2003 LX (4Cyl). When I took the vehicle to Honda dealer to inspect the code they told me after inspection that it’s a O2 sensor problem and need to be replaced. Here I have few questions
  1. Where is the location of this sensor?? I am confused here while going thru online videos. One is showing it is inside Hood and other is showing it is below the car before tail pile and connection of wire goes inside car at passenger seat.
  2. Can I replace Oxygen sensor one with non-California emission?
My Car has California Emission, but now I am neither staying in California nor going to stay in California.
I am getting two different part numbers 36532-RAD-305 – California emission and 36532-RAA-A01 – 49 State EmissionPlease help me to understand this as cost of parts & labor is varying based on this....

Thanks,
Vinny

The p1157 means the engine computer is seeing too high of voltage from air/fuel sensor (aka oxygen sensor) upstream of the catalytic converter. The root of the problem could be the sensor, the wiring, or possibly the engine computer (PCM). Odds are likely that the sensor is the problem, but replacing that sensor without testing may not fix the problem.

You can not replace the sensor with a non-California version, because your PCM is programmed to read the California-emission sensor.

From the shop manual, the sensor is bolted into the exhaust pipe near the bend from the engine to the catalytic converter. There is also an O2 sensor bolted into the catalytic converter, but this sensor is not giving you a code. You may want to find the sensor and look at the wiring for any obvious damage.

You can go with the OEM Honda sensor with RAD-305. You can also use a Denso aftermarket brand sensor to save some money, because I think Denso has manufactured the Honda part in the past.

The labor to replace a California vs non-California sensor should be the same.

Thanks for quick reply....this is a valuable information. when I am searching Air/Fuel sensor upstream sensor on hondapartsnow.com then I found Two parts.
First one is 36531-RAA-A02 - Sensor Air Fuel ratio ..cost is around $179.00
Second one is 36532-RAA-A01 - Sensor, Oxygen (CHOOSE A/B DEPENDING ON THE ACTUAL PART ON VEHICLE) ....cost is around $97.00
so if i have to buy which one i should buy to resolve P1175 issue which is showing A/F sensor 1 high voltage.....
also if i have to buy Denso part then could you please suggest the part number.
car details - 2003 Accord LX with 2.4L engine.

Thanks,
VInny

the first sensor in your list is the OEM sensor for your code.

densoautoparts.com lists the sensor as 234-9040. Rockauto.com is a site that I like that has that sensor. It looks like all the Accords use the same upstream sensor that your code is indicating. The downstream sensor is different that is inside the catalytic converter.

Is your car a 4 or 2 door? There is something about a coupe fitment. The Denso part is for the 4-door.

Great Thanks a lot to you.....
I will check the part on Rockauto.com as you suggested. One task is over due to your help and now I need to find good mechanic nearby me....
I have tried to speak with Car-X, Midas and some local established Auto shops to replace the A/F Sensor and they want to check once again whether is there any other problem causing to trigger P1157 code and for that they need ~$90-$110 for diagnose.
I know for sure now after spending $90 with Honda dealer that there are no other issue other than A/F sensor and that needs to be replace.

oh! one more to answer to your 2nd question... I do have 2.4L Accord LX 2003 model with 4 door.

Thanks a lot once again for your valuable information and time

Regards,
Vinny
