Default possible heating problem

Hello, I have a 94 ex coup with a bad trany (auto), it slips when the it gets warm. I will be doing a stick swap after the holiday (january). I started to notice that my fan stays on for about 1 to 3 minutes depending on how long I been driving. I added more anti-freeze in the radiator and directly in the block through hose to be sure that I have fluid inside the engine. I also noticed several nights when I get home from work (20 min drive) the resavoir was very hot (boiling). The fan stopped after I let out some heat from the resevoir.

I think I should change my fluid since fluid has been in there for almost three years (not driven for about 18 months) and the thermostat.
Is there something that I may overlooking.

I know that when I experience lots of slippage, the motor works harder and also experience long drives, the trany really gets weird and it just shifts down causing the engine to rev hi (4000+rpm) Any thoughts are appreciated. 1

your tranny should have coolant lines running to it so i think your problemsmight belinked. ive never worked on an automatic with this kind of setup so i can't help you much there.

The autos are internally liquid cooled by the ATF in them. You can get a Hayden 403 tranny cooler kit from the parts store for $30, they've been known to work good.

It just sounds to me like the slipping tranny is making the engines run at higher speeds than normal and is causing it to overheat. Also, the slipping tranny is probably overheating itself, which would be why it starts acting weird. I wouldn't be surprised if all the problems end when you swap in the manual.

Today I had to put 1/2 gallon of antifreeze in the radiator and the overheating did stop. I will run for a while before replacing the thermostat. Finch you are right, I shouldn't have all these problem with the manual. Where can I get that cooling kit.

I know that O'Reilly has them sitting on the shelf behind the counter. Just go and ask for a tranny cooler. Hayden 403 is where it's at.
