Question For A Mechanic...
Hi Folks,
Use to be a member here when I had my accord. Always got good solid advice so that is why I have come here to ask a question concerning another vehicle model.
I am thinking of buying a 1998 Dodge Neon 5 Speed. It only has one problem the owner states. He said every once in a while it pops out of gear and this has only happened in 4th and 5th gears (just pops into neautral). Now this does not happen everyday, and he commutes 90+ miles a day in it...only every so often...like once every two - three weeks.
So, any idea what the problem is and what I would be looking at for repair if any???
thanks folks :-)
peace out,
daddylogan
P.S. - I hope I posted this in the right spot since it is NOT a Honda Accord.

I don't know Neons at all, so this is a lot of guesswork on my part.
The worst it could be is worn synchro hubs but that's kinda bad. It means you have to remove & dismantle the transmission.
But equally likely, the shift linkage might need to be adjusted. I don't know if it's cables or rods, but that can prevent it from going completely "into" gear. If it was your car, I'd suggest trying that adjustment first. You'll need more specific instructions for Neons, because linkages are all different. Maybe look for a Haynes shop manual at the public library???
If it was a car I'm CONSIDERING buying, I'd find a Dodge/Chrysler mechanic & have him do a buyer's inspection. Tell him specifically about this because it might just be a common thing with Neons.
