Random Shutoff
The problem turned out to be the distributor. The ignition coil was replaced and then the problem was still not fixed. After it shut off on me again, the car wouldn't start at all. The shop couldn't even get it to start. They then replaced the distributor and the problem seemed to be fixed. (Over $400 later)
Now, the check engine light is on and there aren't any obvious issues. The code read out to be a possible downstream O2 sensor issue or bad catalytic converter. Here's what I've noticed since the light came on: the fuel economy has decreased by 1-2mpg. I have also noticed a weird whirring sound from 2500-3500 rpms. It almost sounds like a little horn is beeping but very quietly. Above or below that power band, the sound is not there. When I rolled down the windows during driving, it sounds like it is coming from the middle of the car, around where the catalytic converter is. Has anyone heard of this before?

2. For the sound, there might be slight vibration and noise due to worn exhaust hangers. Inspect the hangers.
On another note, there was a Honda technical service bulletin (TSB) for exhaust system noises due to worn gaskets at the mid-pipe. It may or may not have anything to do with your noise problem, as the TSB stated different rpm ranges than what you are stating.
